SUGGESTED
REFERRAL
The earlier the intervention, the better.
A manager should intervene and suggest a
referral to the EAP in conjunction with progressive discipline, if:
This could be increased errors, inability to get
along with others, unacceptable absenteeism, or missed deadlines.
NOTE: A suggested referral should be made
regardless of whether the manager is aware or not of any personal problems.
Many times a work problem can be a sign of a personal problem, but the
employee may choose not to tell the employer.
Case Example:
Pat: Normally a punctual employee, Pat has
worked for the company for 10 years. In the last month, Pat has been
late four times. This is unusual. You would like to let Pat know
it is unacceptable to be late, and have him return to his prior acceptable
attendance record.
Manager's Role:
Early intervention is most effective in returning unacceptable work
performance behavior to acceptable levels.
