Purpose
Meditation is a practice that can bring deeper calm and happiness into one's life.  It is a simple practice of focusing on a single object in the present moment, typically this breath, in a voluntary, relaxed and persistent way, coming back to this breath over and over when the mind wanders.  The result is both a strengthening of concentration and gradual calming of the mind-body.

When we work on staying present, we begin to see more clearly how much we are not present, how the mind wanders easily into "past" or "future" with the associated images and emotions of varying intensities. This class will emphasize staying present through the calming and repetitive practice of meditation, and provide a safe forum for discussing and working with common experiences that may arise during meditation such as high and low energy, physical discomfort, and various emotional states.

Benefits of Meditation
Research findings report many benefits to meditation

  • reduced heart and respiratory rate

  • decreased blood pressure

  • changes in brain associated with decision making

  • feeling calmer

  • less reactive

  • more interest in daily life

  • increased concentration

  • greater impulse control

  • better quality sleep

  • improved immune function

Who Should Attend?
This class is intended for adults.  No prior experience is necessary.  The class is participatory.  Please be prepared to give the practices a try. You do not need to have any special body type.  All movement activities are very gentle.  The most important pre-requisites are your attitude - patience, kindness and willingness - rather than expecting a "quick fix."

What to Wear
When possible, wear clothing that does not constrict the waist and shoes that can be slipped off or are comfortable to walk in.  The movement exercises are designed for people who work and it is understood you may be in business attire, so there is no need for special clothing.

Meditation Props
Meditation will be done in chairs.  There are no cushions or mats, but you're welcome to bring your own if you have them.

Class Structure
This is a four week series, consisting of four, one-hour classes.  The series unfolds organically according to the flow of the group.  Participants will receive instruction on:
- posture
- breath and body awareness
- working with distractions
- incorporating meditative practices into daily life
- resources for continued practice

Classes may include gentle stretching as well as guided meditation with instruction.  Time is allotted for questions, comments and general discussion.
