FORMAL COMPANY REFERRALS

This should be done only as a last change and in consultation with your HR department.  It is advisable for your company to have a formal company referral policy that is clear and practiced consistently.  A policy enforced inconsistently is worse than having no policy at all.  Ideally, Formal Company Referrals represent 0-2% of all referrals.  The practice of early supervisory intervention should obviate the need for formal referrals in most cases.  When they do occur:

a.  Last Chance - the employee has exhausted all steps in progressive discipline

b.  Safety - employee's behavior has caused a problem for the safety of self / others

c.  Employee has violated a policy that requires an assessment;  e.g. Substance Abuse Policy

When to use Formal Company Referrals?

  • Concern for Safety
  • Imminent threat to self or others
  • Last chance performance based
  • Assessment for fitness for duty

"I wanted to let you know that the conversation went well with (the employee).  He indicated that he does have a drinking problem and has been cutting back on his own... says he is doing fine but that is not what we have observed.  He did agree with the referral and signed the form which has been faxed to LMA.  Thank you again for your assistance today."
